What is it?

 

Naturalist are much like kinaesthetic learners, flourish from being able to touch, feel, hold, and try practical hands-on experiences, but generally outdoors within the environment, nature and animals.  It involves how sensitive an individual is towards nature and the world around them

Who is this student with this intelligence?

 

  • Have keen sensory skills - sight, sound, smell, taste and touch.

  • Readily use heightened sensory skills to notice and categorize things from the natural world.

  • Like to be outside, or like outside activities like gardening, nature walks or field trips geared toward observing nature or natural phenomena.

  • Notice patterns easily from their surroundings -- likes, differences, similarities, anomalies

  • Are interested and care about animals or plants.

  • Create, keep or have collections, scrapbooks, logs, or journals about natural objects -- these may include written observations, drawings, pictures and photographs or specimens.

  • Show heightened awareness and concern of the environment and/or for endangered species.

  • Easily learn characteristics, names, categorizations and data about objects or species found in the natural world.

  • Hold classes outside

  • Include connections to the weather and nature

  • Observing nature

  • Classroom where they can move at will, stand and stretch when bored and select a spot for quite work.

  • Break up or celebrate classroom success with an energizer which is a brief activity that is intended to increase energy.

  • Provide a variety of manipulatives for mathematics and literacy etc.

  • Teach concepts through role plays and simulations and assign rolls that absorb energy.

 

What hinders this student?
Sitting still for too long eg silent reading, dead time.

After physical activity they may need extra time to settle down.
